□ Dress appropriately for the industry; if you are unsure what dress is appropriate be conservative - show you take the interview seriously. Your personal grooming and hygiene should be impeccable.
□ Know the exact time and location of your interview; know how long it takes to get there, park, find a restroom to freshen up and put your best you forward.
□ Arrive early; 15 minutes prior to the interview start time. 30 minutes if you have to complete an application.
□ Treat people you encounter with courtesy and respect. Their opinions of you could
be solicited during hiring process.
□ Offer a firm hands shake, make eye contact, and smile when you are greeted by
your interviewer.
□ Be sure to listen and understand the interviewer’s name and correct pronunciation.
□ When your interviewer gives you their first and last name, address your interviewer
by title (Ms., Mr., Dr.) and last name until invited to do otherwise.
□ Have paper and pen to take notes. You want to make sure to note all important
information.
□ Maintain good eye contact throughout the interview.
□ Avoid fidgeting and slouching in your seat.
□ Refrain from chewing gum and eating mints during the interview.
□ Listen carefully, respond to questions and back up your statements with specific
examples whenever possible.
□ Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand a question.
□ Be your best professional self and be honest. Dishonesty will be found out and is
grounds for withdrawing job offers and for firing if discovered after offer.
□ The interviewer is evaluating you as a prospective co-worker. Exhibit a positive
attitude. Behave like someone you would want to work with.
□ Be prepared with intelligent questions to ask the interviewer. You would have
done your research about the employer in advance, ask questions you did not find an answer to in your research.
□ Interviews are a two-way street. Evaluate the interviewer as well as the
organization s/he represents. Be cordial and respectful, think critically about the way you are treated and observe organizational environment.
□ Don’t be afraid to ask for the job. This shows you are secure and you are truly
interested in the position and organization. The interviewer will not expect this so
speak with confidence.
□ Be clear on the next step in the hiring process; know when and from whom you
should expect to hear next. Know what action you are expected to take next, if any.
□ When the interviewer concludes the interview, make good eye contact and close
with a firm handshake.
□ Send a, if possible, handwritten thank-you letter to your interviewer promptly.
