Your goal is to close the deal and get the job and the hardest sell you are going to do is sell yourself. Beware and stay away from these job blockers.
□ Take responsibility for your decisions and your actions. Don’t make excuses.
□ Don’t make negative comments about previous employers, professors, co-workers,
etc.
□ Don’t falsify application information or give false statements during the interview.
□ Don’t treat the interview casually, only take the interview if you are truly interested
in the position and organization.
□ Don’t give the impression you are only interested in an organization because of the
salary. Only after the interviewer mentions it then you can discuss it.
□ Don’t act as though you are desperate for employment and will take any job.
□ Don’t be unprepared for standard interview questions. ex. Where do you see
yourself in 10 years?
□ A job search can be frustrations; don’t exhibit frustrations or a negative attitude on
telephone screening or in the interview.
□ Don’t slouch or sit rigidly on the edge of your chair. Relax and sit comfortably with a
straightened back and good eye contact.
□ Don’t assume that a female interviewer is “Mrs.” or “Miss”. Address her as “Ms.”
unless specified. If she has a Ph.D. or other doctoral degree, use “Dr. and her last
name”.
□ Don’t chew gum or smell like smoke. Don’t suck on mints or candy during the
interview.
□ Don’t allow your cell phone to ring and disrupt the interview. If by chance it does
quickly turn it off and apologize and then move back into the interview .
□ Don’t take your children, friend, neighbor, parent, your pet (a service animal is not
considered a pet in this case), spouse, fiancé or anyone else to an interview.
Relax, be confident and show them you are well qualified and why you are the best person for the position. You will do great.
~ Here’s to you closing the deal.
